No mental health support for new mothers

Charity warned this weekend of “huge gaps” in mental health support for new mothers.

The National Childbirth Trust found that only 3% of England’s NHS organisations have pre- and post-natal counseling or mental health checks in place.

More than half of the 194 Clinical Commissioning Groups queried also admitted that no provisions were to be set in future.

“One in ten mothers experience some form of postnatal depression”, said the Trust’s chief exec Belinda Phipps.

“We need to see properly staffed and resourced services with clear lines of responsibility and clear targets for delivery. And we need to see that happening urgently.”
